In 1761, George Washington moved to Mount Vernon and began growing berries in his expansive gardens. By 1867, over forty varieties of raspberries were recognised. After the Civil War, New York, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana emerged as significant production regions. In 1880, approximately 2,000 acres were under cultivation.
