Prepare to consume this exotic produce however you please. Raspberries with cream are a scrumptious method for people to enjoy their midsummer crops, and this practise dates back to the earliest agricultural communities.
It is believed that red raspberries originated in Turkey and dispersed throughout Mediterranean Europe centuries ago. Palladius, a Roman agriculturalist of the fourth century, documented the domestication of raspberries in his writings. As a result of the discovery of raspberry seeds in Roman forts in Britain, it is believed that the Romans disseminated raspberry cultivation across Europe.
In Mediaeval Europe, wild berries were considered medicinal and decorative; the liquid was used as paint and ink for manuscripts. During this time period, only the wealthy could enjoy the bounty. The first individual to advocate for the cultivation of berries was King Edward I (1272-1307). By the 17th century, berries and berry shrubs were abundant in British gardens. One century later, the cultivation of berries spread throughout Europe.
Native Americans were already consuming berries prior to the arrival of Europeans in North America. As nomads, Native Americans dried berries to preserve and transport them readily. Europeans also carried native European raspberries with them to the new colonies. William Price sold the initial commercial nursery plants in 1771. In 1761, George Washington moved to Mount Vernon and began growing berries in his expansive gardens. By 1867, over forty varieties of raspberries were recognised. After the Civil War, New York, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana emerged as significant production regions. In 1880, approximately 2,000 acres were under cultivation.
