The background of National Raspberry Cake Day

Once a midsummer crop, raspberries now thrive in all temperate regions of the globe. As with everything else, technological advancements have made it possible to produce this berry year-round. The ripest, most succulent fruit are harvested from July to September, making July the ideal time to observe National Raspberry Cake Day.
The raspberry itself has been consumed since ancient times. Our Palaeolithic ancestors would pluck them from bushes to consume them. Not until the fourth century B.C. did humans begin cultivating raspberries. Their sweetness was prized, and they were used in everything from medicinal sachets to herbal beverages. There are records of this cultivation in Rome, and seedlings have been discovered in Roman forts in Britain. It is believed that the Romans disseminated the cultivation of raspberries throughout Europe for this reason.

These wild berries were utilised in a variety of ways during the Middle Ages; they were added to remedies and used as pigments in paintings and manuscripts. The only class that could afford these grapes at that time was the upper class. By the 17th century, however, these berries were cultivated throughout British gardens, and their cultivation progressively spread across Europe.

When European settlers arrived in America, they discovered that Native Americans had long since been consuming this fruit. The cultivated variety was introduced to the United States, and commercial plants were soon distributed nationwide. In 1880, approximately 2,000 acres of land were used to cultivate raspberries. By the time the world entered the 19th century, raspberries were being grown in a number of significant American states.

These berries have also been associated with a number of superstitions. According to one of them, raspberries were once white until Ida, a nymph, pricked her finger while gathering berries for a crying baby. Her blood dripped onto them, causing them to turn crimson. A German myth asserts that a raspberry twig was attached to the body of a ‘bewitched’ horse to calm it down. Another myth attributes the fox’s red pelt to consuming an excessive amount of raspberries.

There is currently no information on this particular day, its progenitor, or the origins of the raspberry cake. All we know is that we are extremely grateful to whoever came up with the concept, and we are elevating a slice of raspberry cake in their honour.
