National Sangria Day 2023: Date, History and Why this Day Is So Great

Sangria's appeal is growing all year, even though most Americans prefer to drink it in the summer.

National Sangria Day 2023: On December 20 of each year, we observe National Sangria Day! We’re ready for the punch that the Spanish have laced. A great, cold sangria, whether red or white, is unquestionably pleasant and instantly takes you to the sandy beaches of Spain during the summer.

The National Sangria Day History

The Greeks and Romans of antiquity mixed their wine with sugar, spices, and other available ingredients. These beverages, known as “hippocras,” were occasionally served hot, like mulled wine. The common ancestor of sangria and mulled wine is Hippocrates. These were frequently ingested because the water was tainted with bacteria and was dangerous to drink at the time. The water gained taste when diluted wine was added, and it became drinkable with a dash of alcohol.

Specifically, sangria is modeled after the classic red wine punch that has been enjoyed for centuries throughout Europe. Claret, the British word for Bordeaux wine from Bordeaux, France, would be the foundation of the punch. Traditionally, merlot, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon are combined to make this red wine. For added flavor, fruit and brandy would also be added. During the 18th and 19th centuries, “Claret Cup Punch” was served at gatherings of various sizes. Even the heroines of Jane Austen prefer to sip on this beverage.

In the years 1,100 BC and 200 BC, the Phoenicians and the Romans planted miles of vineyards in Spain. Rome was largely satisfied by Spanish wines, which led to a thriving wine shipping trade. Spain’s environment was ideal for the growth of red grapes and fruits, and the inhabitants started referring to their wine punches as “sangria,” which is Spanish for “bloodletting.” The punch, known as zurra in south Spain, is made with nectarine or peach. While white wine is also a possibility and is referred to as “sangria blanco,” red wine is the traditional base for sangria in Spain.

A sangria is available for everyone.

There are various varieties of this traditional beverage, regardless of whether you are wine-averse or prefer white wine over red. Simply add your preferred fresh fruits to a glass of red or white wine or grape juice. That’s how easy it is.

Sangria Day National Statistics

9.3% rise in popularity

Sangria’s appeal is growing all year, even though most Americans prefer to drink it in the summer. Given that the alcoholic punch is tasty, cool, and full of fruit that has been soaked in wine, how could it not be? Although it’s undoubtedly the ideal summertime beverage, you can also reheat it in the winter to have a cozy hot drink. How adaptable!

In America, 120 million people drink wine.

Millennials and Baby Boomers comprise the bulk of wine consumers among all wine enthusiasts. The preferred beverage for celebrations is thought to be wine. There’s a wine that’s appropriate for any occasion, whether you pull out the bubbly, a robust red, or a crisp white. Understandably, 36% of Americans consume wine. Americans have many reasons for celebration, including new family formation, career accomplishments, and college degrees.

The US has 550,000 outlets that sell wine.

That represents a rise in outlets of roughly 120,000 during the previous ten years. These days, you can purchase a glass of wine at bookshops, movie theaters, and even car washes instead of only being able to do so at sit-down restaurants or pricey aged reds and whites at art exhibits! Though we’re not whining, get a glass of white wine and browse your preferred genre at the bookstore that serves wine. It’s pretty much the ideal afternoon.
