However, this custom dates back more than just 2006.

Seed trading is a millennium-old custom. As they toured the world, traders brought seeds with them and forged relationships with foreigners by trading each other’s priceless possessions. European and Dutch colonists brought with them some of the most widely consumed grains, fruits, and vegetables in the United States today.
