The background of National Soft Ice Cream Day

Even though there is evidence that the first genuine ice cream could have originated as early as 200 B.C., there are no anecdotes or notable stories from the time period. Alexander the Great and Emperor Nero of Rome, both of whom relished flavoured snow and ice, are mentioned in early accounts of ice cream. After Marco Polo brought an ice-cream-like recipe back to Italy from the East at the end of the 16th century, its popularity spread throughout Europe. Charles I enjoyed ‘Cream Ice,’ and Catherine de’ Medici, who married Henry II of France in 1553, introduced it to France.

The 1740s marked the introduction of soft-serve ice cream to the United States, which would later become the dessert’s birthplace. Ice cream first appeared in advertisements in the United States in 1777, though it may have been served on dinner tables earlier. George Washington reportedly spent over $200 on ice cream in a single summer at his Mount Vernon estate, which featured two ice cream containers.

In the nineteenth century, newly constructed ice houses and ice cream manufacturing made ice cream accessible to the general public. By the middle of the twentieth century, the manufacture and distribution of ice cream was a thriving industry. The incorporation of ice cream into American culture led to the emergence of refreshment fountains and sundaes. By World War II, troops were supplied with ice cream to bolster morale, and floating ice cream parlours were constructed for Pacific sailors.

Soft ice cream was created around the time of World War II, though there is debate over who invented it. Tom Carvel, the founder of Carvel, allegedly invented soft ice cream when his ice cream truck developed a flat tyre and he was forced to sell his melting wares rapidly. He quickly returned and opened a permanent shop selling his reformulated ice cream, which was a tremendous success. Dairy Queen also claims to have invented soft-serve in Illinois, where J.F. McCullough and his son perfected their recipe and conducted a wildly successful all-you-can-eat trial at a friend’s store. There are also rumours that former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher developed American soft-serve ice cream recipes while working as a chemist for a food manufacturer!

We cannot be certain of the origin of soft-serve or Margaret Thatcher’s involvement. Soft-serve ice cream has become a staple at some of the most exciting locations, such as sporting events, amusement parks, and fairs, since those daring scientists innovated the centuries-old classic! Most individuals have fond memories of soft-serve ice cream from their youth.
