National Sticky Bun Day 2023: Date, Background, Recipes

The aroma of a sticky bun instantly induces feelings of cosiness and warmth. Whether they are baking in your oven or you smell them at the mall, as soon as that familiar scent hits you, images of fireplaces and pyjamas begin to form in your mind.

What complements coffee better than something slightly sweet, nutty, and perhaps oozing with caramel? Yes, you understand what we’re discussing. The 21st of February is National Sticky Bun Day! German settlers in the 18th century are believed to have brought this delectable Philadelphia specialty, formerly known as “Schnecken,” to the United States. Sticky buns are frequently served for breakfast and are also known as cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, and monkey bread.

The background of National Sticky Bun Day

The aroma of a sticky bun instantly induces feelings of cosiness and warmth. Whether they are baking in your oven or you smell them at the mall, as soon as that familiar scent hits you, images of fireplaces and pyjamas begin to form in your mind. Then, as you slowly unroll the doughy labyrinth, the sweetness and spices transport you to a place of happiness and comfort that few other foods can match. Sticky buns are relatively simple to prepare. And there are virtually no restrictions on what can be used to fill or top them. Warm spices such as cinnamon, cloves, or even cardamom are excellent choices, but you can also experiment with apple or chocolate fillings. You can also make your own sticky sauce by substituting maple syrup or honey for sugar. Regardless of your decision, have fun and enjoy the stickiness! It is difficult to imagine anyone not being completely enamoured by a gooey, sticky, fluffy rolled bun. Most people have fond childhood memories of opening a package of store-bought dough, the aroma of baking, and the amusement of carefully frosting each bun. Half the fun of attending the travelling fair is locating the sticky bun booth and methodically eating through to the delicious centre. Be wary if you ever encounter someone who does not enjoy sticky buns.

How to make a sticky bun

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 package active dry yeast
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 eggs, beaten
FILLING:
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
GLAZE:
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
2 to 3 tablespoons milk

In a small bowl, heat milk until it reaches 105°. Add sugar and yeast; stir to combine. Let stand for 5 minutes. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add butter; mix with a fork or dough blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add eggs and yeast mixture; mix until well blended.

Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes, or until dough is smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, turning to coat top of dough. Cover with a damp cloth; let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Meanwhile, make filling: In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Punch down dough; turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 12-inch-by-16-inch rectangle. Sprinkle with filling, leaving a 1/2-inch border on all sides. Starting at one long side, roll up jelly-roll style; pinch seam to seal. Cut roll into 12

Top 5 places to get a sticky bun in the U.S

When it comes to sticky buns, there are a few key things you should look for – a sticky, gooey center; a nice, crispy outer layer; and of course, plenty of delicious toppings. With National Sticky Bun Day coming up on February 21st, we’ve rounded up the 5 best places in the United States to get your fix.

1. Beignet & Co. – San Francisco, California

With Beignet & Co., you can get your sticky bun fix in the form of a beignet (a French fried pastry). These beignets are coated in a caramel sauce and come with your choice of dipping sauce. We recommend the chocolate ganache – it’s heavenly!

2. Cinnaholic – Berkeley, California

Cinnaholic is all about custom cinnamon rolls – you can choose your own frosting and toppings from over 30 different options. Our favorite combination is the classic roll with cream cheese frosting and pecans. Yum!

3. The Cinnamon Snail – New York City, New York

The Cinnamon Snail started out as a food truck serving up vegan and organic fare, and they now have brick-and-mortar locations in New Jersey and New York City. Their sticky buns come topped with an apple cinnamon compote and are absolutely delicious. Plus, they’re vegan AND gluten-free!

Recipes for different kinds of sticky buns

There are many recipes for different kinds of sticky buns, and they vary depending on the region where they are made. However, there are some common elements to all recipes. The dough is usually sweetened with sugar and flavoured with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves. Fruit, nuts and raisins are also often added to the dough or used as a topping.

The dough is rolled into a flat sheet and then cut into small pieces. These pieces are then rolled into balls and placed in a baking dish. A sticky syrup or glaze is often spread over the top of the buns before they are baked.

Once baked, the buns are brushed with more syrup or glaze and then served warm. They can be enjoyed plain or with a dollop of whipped cream, ice cream or even cheese.
