National Tartar Sauce Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

The precise origin of tartar sauce is unknown. Some claim that tartar sauce dates back to the Roman era, while others insist that it originated in France.

National Tartar Sauce Day is observed on February 24, 2019, the Friday following Lent. The purpose of this holiday is to draw attention to the delicious condiment that imparts a distinct flavour to every dish. Since Lent prohibits the consumption of meat and seafood is the only remaining option, tartar sauce becomes a necessity in every home. As Lent approaches, tartar sauce is used on seafood and makes a great dish during this time. Since meat is prohibited, we appreciate fish and other seafood with tartar sauce more. Whether or not we are able to consume meat, the deliciousness never ceases. Consequently, it merits a special day on which its contribution to the world of cuisine can be recognised. In addition, the day is a treat for any foodie who enjoys spicing up their dinners. So let’s commence the festivities!

The background of National Tartar Sauce Day

The precise origin of tartar sauce is unknown. Some claim that tartar sauce dates back to the Roman era, while others insist that it originated in France. A few argue that the condiment originated in France. The current tartar sauce, known as sauce tartare, originated in France. In some areas of Europe, South Africa, and Australia, the term is spelled “tartare sauce.”

Tartar sauce is typically comprised of mayonnaise, pickles, capers, herbs, and, in some recipes, hard-cooked eggs or lemon juice. Recipes vary geographically to accommodate individual preferences and tastes. The sauce is prepared as an accompaniment for seafood. Cod, salmon, haddock, shrimp, and pollack are the finest seafood options. In the 1920s, tartar sauce became commercially available, making it easier to purchase rather than prepare from scratch.

National Tartar Sauce Day, which occurs every Friday after the beginning of Lent, has a religious and cultural connection to food. This is because, as an increasing number of people switch to eating fish, the sauce’s distinct flavour becomes essential. National Tartar Sauce Day was created as a result of the realisation that dietary restrictions can affect individuals’ eating habits. Frisch’s Big Boy established the day in 2017 to pay homage to the condiment that becomes an annual must-have. Nevertheless, Frisch’s relationship with tartar sauce is its own story. The first Frisch’s cafe opened in Cincinnati in 1923, and the original owner’s son, Dave Frisch, took over the business in 1923. This is when Dave began experimenting with food and ultimately added his homemade tartar sauce to the Big Boy. In the 1960s, Dave’s special sauce became popular and was subsequently sold in stores. Since the tartar sauce contributed to the restaurant’s immediate success, it is not surprising that Dave Frisch created a special day for it.

National Tartar Sauce Day is observed at a time when the condiment is in high demand because seafood is the most popular seasonal food item. Lenten practises include abstinence from beef and chicken. With its creaminess and tanginess, tartar sauce is the best way for non-fish lovers to appreciate fish and seafood.

Obviously, prior to the discovery of tartar sauce, people used other sauces to flavour food. During the Middle Ages, mustard was particularly popular. Additionally, the ingredients for mustard were altered to make it more commercially viable. In the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, other sauces such as Pesto sauce, chutney, soy sauce, and ketchup were created!

Also enjoyed with pita bread, potato chips, and roasted vegetables. We celebrate National Tartar Sauce Day with an abundance of seafood and tartar sauce. If you have no taste for fish, you can eat it with vegetables.
