National Teflon Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Teflon Day is on April 6, and we will be celebrating a technological breakthrough that has made our lives easier. This material’s resistance to chemicals, heat, and cold has revolutionised the fabrication and production of numerous products. As a non-stick material, Teflon has a wide range of applications, including medicine, weaponry, culinary utensils and more. The durability of Teflon-coated products is favoured by a large number of consumers. Its impact is a technological watershed, making it worthy of celebration. Therefore, a special day has been designated to celebrate its existence in our ever-expanding technological world.

The background of National Teflon Day

Cooking can be a monotonous activity. The entire process of frying, steaming, heating, and grilling, as well as every other step involved in preparing the delectable meals we so enjoy, can be exhausting. The arduous task of scrubbing and cleansing all the utensils, which are covered in grease, oil, and numerous stains and can take a long time to become stain-free, follows.

Popular polymer ‘Polytetrafluoroethylene’ (P.T.F.E.) is referred to as Teflon. It is an industrial coating applied by engineers to the surfaces of materials and implements in order to prevent and protect them from chemicals, corrosion, grease, oil, and other staining agents. Dr. Roy Plunkett discovered Teflon by accident while working in a laboratory to produce a refrigerant. He observed that oil and other substances did not adhere to the material’s surface.

The laboratory where he worked, Chemours Jackson Laboratory, patented the discovery, but a professor, Marion A. Trozzolo, later incorporated Teflon to sheath his scientific instruments. Trozzolo subsequently incorporated Teflon into kitchenware, founding Laboratory Plasticware Fabricators, which introduced the first Teflon-coated frying pan made in the United States, the ‘Happy Pan.’

Today, Teflon can be found in unexpected locations. It is used to coat medical and laboratory equipment, make projectiles, protect aircraft, and for pharmaceutical purposes, among other things. Teflon is used to coat pans, pots and cooking implements in our residences, relieving us of the burden of washing and scrubbing them.

5 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT TEFLON

Plunkett discovered Teflon by accident while seeking for an inflammable coolant for refrigeration.

Teflon is used to coat armour-piercing projectiles and in the production of atomic bombs.

Teflon is resistant to temperatures as high as 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Teflon would begin to soften and emit fumes at temperatures as high as 752 degrees Fahrenheit, which, if inhaled, can induce flu-like symptoms known as ‘polymer flu.’

Teflon-coated surfaces are inaccessible to gecko climbers. Geckos can scale virtually any wall or surface, but they cannot scale Teflon-coated surfaces.
