Initially, the milkshake was deemed an adult beverage. The beverage appeared in print for the first time in 1885 and contained eggs and whisky.
The 20th of June is National Vanilla Milkshake Day, which is dedicated to commemorating the original vanilla milkshake. It is created by combining milk, ice cream, and vanilla flavouring to create a traditional beverage. Vanilla is indigenous to central Mexico and is the only fruit-bearing orchid family member. Ancient Totonac Indians of Mexico were the first to consume the fruit of the Tlilxochitl vine, but after their defeat by the Aztecs, they were no longer the sole proprietors of the fruit.
Initially, the milkshake was deemed an adult beverage. The beverage appeared in print for the first time in 1885 and contained eggs and whisky. It was characterised as a robust and nutritious egg nog that was served as a tonic and a beverage. Despite how child-friendly they appear now, the original milkshakes were not kid-friendly. The flavourings would not arrive until much later.
In the early 1900s, various ice cream flavours were used in milkshakes. The first syrups were vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, and they were an instant success. At that time, before the invention of the electric blender, milkshakes were shaken by hand. When the drink mixer was invented in 1911, milkshakes began to appear at soda fountains, which increased their accessibility.
Stephen Poplawski, the proprietor of Stevens Electric, invented the electric blender in 1922 for blending beverages such as malts and milkshakes. This useful innovation brought milkshakes from beverage fountains to the home, and more restaurants began to offer them. In 1949, Dairy Queen introduced milkshakes to their menu, which was followed by many other restaurants.
The beverage is still popular today. While the local soda/malt store has become a novelty of the past, this classic treat is still available at many restaurants and ice cream parlours. Despite the fact that numerous flavours have been developed since the early days of the milkshake, the vanilla milkshake remains a classic reminder of the past.

Joseph Friedman invented and patented the straw in 1937 after observing that drinking a milkshake directly from the glass was challenging.
