Pâté Day 2023: date, History, Activities, Facts about Pate

This tasty French dish is easy to make and can be done in your home.

Pâté Day 2023: There is a paté holiday on November 1. This is a great chance to learn more about the history and traditions of this delicious treat. It’s possible to put paté on bread. It’s made from crushed cooked meat and usually minced fat. Paté is a paste, pie, or bread that is filled with ground meat. Forcemeat often has fat, veggies, herbs, spices, and wine or brandy (often cognac or Armagnac). It can be made from ground pork, chicken, fish, or beef. A lot of the time, it’s given with crackers or bread.

PÂTÉ DAY’S HISTORY

Paté is a food that is often linked with wealth, but a lot of people have never tried it. Some people think of expensive fancy duck’s liver or chopped liver right away when they hear the word “paté.” There is no doubt that both are correct. But paté isn’t just made from chicken or duck. It could be as fancy as you want, fit for a big event, or a cheap starter that everyone at a dinner party loves.

It’s not as hard as you might think to make most patés. It tastes better after being frozen for a few days, but you can serve it hot or cold. The word “paste” comes from the French language. In the French way, it is cooked in a crust (en croûte) or in the shape of a terrine. Surprisingly, the crust of the en croûte version wasn’t meant to be eaten at first. At first, the crust’s job was to hold the paté together.

These days, people often use the words “paté” and “terrine” to mean the same thing. Paté is just ground seafood, chicken, pork, or veggies that have been seasoned. It’s made with a lot of different materials.

Beef, hog, liver, ham, shellfish, wild game, chicken, or vegetables can all be used to make paté. It’s possible for the grind to be chunky or smooth and creamy. You can get it hot or cold, shaped or not shaped.

Paté is often thought of as a French food. But this dish is made in different ways all over the world. People in the United States who don’t know much about paté may love liverwurst and not realize that the two are the same thing. When liverwurst is cut, it’s often used as a sandwich filler.

PARKING DAY THINGS TO DO

Watch how it’s being made.

Watching the paté being made is a treat! You can see how the paté is cooked, then slowly cooled by hand on cold marble blocks before being put on a machine that pulls it. Most paté makers offer tours where you can see this.

Take a bite of paté.

There’s no better way to honor Paté Day than to eat it. You can eat it for lunch or with toast.

Tell others about it

If you run a shop or restaurant, giving away paté is a great way to celebrate and get more people to know about you. If not, you can just make your own and give it to people.
