The National Association of Letter Carriers (N.A.L.C.) organises National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day. The initiative began in October 1991 as a pilot programme in ten locations across the United States.
National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day is celebrated on May 13, the second Saturday of May. It is the greatest food drive in the United States and occurs in over 10,000 cities. Every day, one in eight Americans confront hunger, and we would like to remind everyone that they can contribute to this wonderful initiative. The Stamp Out Hunger Donor Drive seeks to feed the hungry in the United States, and as always, we can and will do so with your assistance.
The National Association of Letter Carriers (N.A.L.C.) organises National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day. The initiative began in October 1991 as a pilot programme in ten locations across the United States. It was a tremendous success and has continued annually since. The initiative was created by a union that desired to give back to those in need, whether by donating funds to a charity, collaborating during disasters, or protecting victims of natural disasters and crimes.
Later, the date of the event was changed to the second Saturday of May. The N.A.L.C. determined that late spring would be the optimal season for the food campaign. This was because food charities and pantries ran out of food by May due to a decrease in donations following the holidays.
Postmen were the most aware of the obstacles communities encountered. Consequently, on this day, mail carriers deliver correspondence and collect food donations. As individuals deliver orders, invoices, and postcards, their mailbags are filled with nonperishable food donations.
During the past two decades, one billion pounds of food have been shipped. The N.A.L.C.-representing mail carriers are assisted by rural letter carriers, other messenger employees, and volunteers. In 2010, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive received a variety of awards, including two Presidential Certificates of Achievement.
