The Big Lunch 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The Big Lunch is celebrated annually during the first weekend of June. This year, it occurs from June 3 to June 4. Since its inception, it has been eagerly anticipated in the United Kingdom. Who else would not look forward to a day when neighbours and communities gather in designated areas to converse, dine, laugh, dance, sing, and otherwise enjoy themselves? This event has created millions of enduring connections across the United Kingdom, and this year’s celebration will be especially memorable because it will occur during Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee.

The background of The Big Lunch

The Big Lunch is the U.K.’s Thanksgiving weekend, during which communities and neighbours gather in open spaces or designated locations to eat, drink, chat, appreciate each other’s company, and thereby become better acquainted.

Since 2009, The Big Lunch has been celebrated throughout the United Kingdom. The first weekend of June is a time when communities and neighbourhoods come together to enjoy a supper together and strengthen social bonds. The event was established and organised for the first time by the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, which promotes activities aimed at “deepening our collective understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things and seeing them as a whole…” Since its inception, an annual average of over six million individuals have participated in The Big Lunch. It is therefore not surprising that the event is one of the most captivating in the United Kingdom.

Each year’s celebration is accompanied by success tales from across the nation, and an increasing number of people now take part in the festivities. During the event, new alliances are formed, and in 2019, approximately seven million people participated in the gatherings. The following year, that number dropped to 3.3 million, but only because of the pandemic. These numbers demonstrate the enormously positive impact of the event and the positive results it has produced.

Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee is scheduled to be celebrated during the first week of June, including the month’s first weekend, in 2022, when The Big Lunch will undoubtedly be a spectacular event. This means that The Big Lunch coincides with the national commemoration, turning this year’s celebration into one Big Jubilee Lunch.
