Since 2009, The Big Lunch has been celebrated throughout the United Kingdom. The first weekend of June is a time when communities and neighbourhoods come together to enjoy a supper together and strengthen social bonds. The event was established and organised for the first time by the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, which promotes activities aimed at “deepening our collective understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things and seeing them as a whole…” Since its inception, an annual average of over six million individuals have participated in The Big Lunch. It is therefore not surprising that the event is one of the most captivating in the United Kingdom.

Each year’s celebration is accompanied by success tales from across the nation, and an increasing number of people now take part in the festivities. During the event, new alliances are formed, and in 2019, approximately seven million people participated in the gatherings. The following year, that number dropped to 3.3 million, but only because of the pandemic. These numbers demonstrate the enormously positive impact of the event and the positive results it has produced.

Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee is scheduled to be celebrated during the first week of June, including the month’s first weekend, in 2022, when The Big Lunch will undoubtedly be a spectacular event. This means that The Big Lunch coincides with the national commemoration, turning this year’s celebration into one Big Jubilee Lunch.
