This year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is on September 29. It is a day to not only appreciate one of the world’s most popular beverages, but also to make a difference by raising funds for cancer patients. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 9.6 million deaths annually. However, approximately 3.7 million lives per year could be saved through early detection, prevention, and treatment.
World’s Biggest Coffee Morning began in 1991 with over 200,000 participants across the United Kingdom. Currently, the event raises over $25,000,000 for Macmillan’s Cancer Support.
The background of World’s Biggest Coffee Morning
Douglas Macmillan founded Macmillan’s Cancer support in 1911, and it has since become the dominant source of cancer aid in the United Kingdom. Douglas founded the organization after witnessing his father’s death from cancer and desiring to assist others in similar circumstances.
Macmillan founded the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer with the intention of providing cancer patients with free or low-cost housing as well as advice and information. In 1925, after establishing the foundation, the National Society for Cancer Relief was among the first to recognize the financial burden of cancer.
The charity focused on distributing grants for medical fees, nursing care, clothing, artificial limbs and hot water bottles. Douglas Macmillan died of cancer in 1969, having devoted the majority of his life to fighting the disease. With decades of research and assistance provided throughout history, Douglas’s legacy carries on today.
In 1991, the first-ever Coffee Morning was held. It was a modest affair with a straightforward concept. Guests would congregate over coffee and donate the cost of their beverage to Macmillan. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has come a long way since then. It is now the largest and longest-standing fundraising event of its kind in the UK.
Some Coffee Morning presenters have elevated their fundraising efforts over the years. This includes a Coffee Morning held 100 feet below ground in Cornwall’s Poldark mine, a Coffee Morning on a jet fighter, and the most remote Coffee Morning conducted in Antarctica!
