German Language Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

It is one of the longest German words and something to contemplate on September 9, which is National German Language Day.

Non-German speakers may find “Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz” to be incomprehensible. In actuality, this word (whose pronunciation we will not attempt) is now obsolete. It translates as the “Beef Labelling Delegation Monitoring Act.” And yet, we lament its loss today.

German is the vernacular of the poets Bertolt Brecht, Rainer Maria Rilke, and the classic cinema of the Weimar Republic. In an effort to promote the language and encourage more people to acquire it, the German Language Association (VDS) established this day 17 years ago, reviving the global use of German.

The background of German Language Day

German, the native tongue of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, is spoken by 95 million people globally. In addition, it’s intriguing that a single German word contains eighty letters! Individual nations are working hard to preserve their own national lingua franca in a world where English is becoming the dominant language on the international stage. Reviving the German language is an effort to preserve Germany’s culture and history. On National German Language Day, however, you should watch German television if you wish to acquire contemporary German. Learning and speaking their mother tongue is one of the most important methods for German children living abroad to connect with their culture and heritage. Being bilingual or even trilingual is an advantage in today’s global business environment. According to historical archives, ancient Romans had contact with German speakers. Luther translates the Bible into German, providing an alternative to Latin for the people. This German classic was helmed by Wolfgang Peterson and achieved worldwide renown. The German Language Association (VDS) celebrated this day for the first time, launching a global campaign to promote the German language.

DAY OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES

Anybody speak German?

Learning German can be a lot of fun, particularly if you plan to use it during a European vacation. But if you cannot travel to Germany, there are German bakeries and bookstores in the United States where you can practise what you’ve learned.

Read a German masterpiece

Even a translation into English will suffice. Because you will learn more the more you read. National German Language Day is also an excellent time to view classic German horror films such as “Nosferatu” and “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”

Enjoy a beverage. The toast!

Okay, so technically this is not Oktoberfest. As far as we are aware, however, everything German calls for a cool beer. And a succulent bratwurst!

5 German language facts that will untwist your tongue

Chinese (including both Mandarin and Cantonese), English, Hindi-Urdu, Spanish, Russian, and German are the most widely-spoken languages in the globe, in descending order. Additionally, it is the most spoken language in Europe. Best regards!

Goethe, Schiller, Brecht, Marx, and Nietzsche were all proficient in the German language.

Both languages belong to the West Germanic family. German and English cultures have significantly influenced one another, and there’s even a bit of sibling rivalry!

Feminine, masculine, and neuter. Some languages, such as Polish, have six grammatical genders, if that is difficult to comprehend (and say)!

“That is not your beer” is the literal translation of “Das ist nicht dein Bier.” However, the true meaning is “this is none of your business, stay out!”
