Hawaiian Shirt Day in United States 2023: Date, History, Facts, Programmes

Hawaii's islands are strategically located in the Pacific Ocean, 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland. It is the only state outside of the Western United States and the only tropical state.

Hawaiian Shirt Day is observed on the third Friday of August, which falls on August 18 this year. The celebration commemorates the day Hawaii officially became the fifty-first state of the United States of America. The day commemorates Hawaii’s long-running campaign for statehood and is also celebrated as National Statehood Day on the island. Hawaii was annexed by the U.S. in the 1800s and was a territory of the U.S. for a long time. Hawaii’s incorporation into the U.S. has since transformed the island, making it the ideal tropical destination for families and thrill-seekers.

The background of Hawaiian Shirt Day

Hawaii’s islands are strategically located in the Pacific Ocean, 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland. It is the only state outside of the Western United States and the only tropical state. Hawaii is comprised of eight islands: Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Lnai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. It is home to approximately 1.5 million Americans.

Captain James Cook, a British explorer, was the first European to visit the Hawaiian Islands, approximately 500 years after the islands’ last contact with the outside world. At that meeting, the rich history of Hawaii for the west was forged, leading to Hawaii’s strategic importance to the American government.

Hawaii is located between the United States and Japan, and an influx of Japanese immigrants and the rise of Japanese imperialism led the United States to view Japan as a menace that must be monitored carefully. As an increasing number of Japanese migrants came to the islands to labour in the sugar trade, U.S. officials grew concerned that the island might become a Japanese territory. The United States responded by rapidly incorporating Hawaii into its territory and preparing to annexe it in 1893. The U.S.-backed revolt on the island of Hawaii resulted in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Royal Family, the placement of the queen under house arrest, and the island’s brief transformation into the Republic of Hawaii. After much struggle, Hawaii was granted statehood in 1959 and united with the other American states.
