International FND Day is observed annually on April 13 and was first observed in 2013. It seeks to raise awareness, assist patients, and advance research into the prevention and treatment of ‘FND’ or ‘Functional Neurological Disorder’ It was created by “FND Hope,” a nonprofit organisation that promotes awareness and support for FND patients, families, and carers. FND is the second most common neurological condition. Ironically, patients with these disorders may receive inadequate care, despite the fact that their symptoms are commonly observed in neurology clinics worldwide.
The term ‘Functional Neurological Disorder’ or ‘FND’ refers to a disorder that disrupts brain-to-body communication. There is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system, and it can occur even when the brain and body are operating normally. It can also mimic other conditions, leading to the misdiagnosis of many patients. The aetiology of FND is unknown despite its prevalence. Historically, it was considered a psychological disorder manifesting as physical symptoms due to repressed trauma.
Four to twelve individuals per 100,000 are estimated to develop FND. It can be caused by biological factors such as early childhood trauma, anxiety, or maltreatment. Relationships and stress are sociological factors that can precipitate an episode. Patients may exhibit a wide variety or combination of physical, cognitive, and sensory symptoms. This includes motor dysfunctions such as limb paralysis, mobility difficulties, and speech slurring. Examples of sensory dysfunction include loss of vision and facial paralysis. Also, they may experience altered states of consciousness, such as lapses and seizures. Many suffer from chronic pain, insomnia, fatigue, and melancholy. Symptoms can fluctuate frequently, be constant, or differ from day to day. Even complete remission can be followed by an unexpected relapse. It is also common for a physical injury or other illness to precipitate the onset of symptoms.
Successful management of FND requires effective communication between the patient and physician. A thorough explanation of the diagnosis and patient education is essential for receiving the proper treatment. On a larger scale, international organisations such as “FND Hope” raise awareness, fund research to discover a potential cure for FND, and most importantly advocate for those whose lives have been altered by FND.
