International Nurses Day is observed annually on May 12 by nurses throughout the globe. As children, some of them adored their nurses, while others recoiled at the site of blue scrubs. Some had pleasant smiles and gentle expressions, and they never forgot our gift as we left. While others had warmer smiles and friendlier faces, we were reminded of the day we were pricked in the eye with a sharp syringe while gazing out the window. However, we know that everything worked out for the best in the end. Nurses, clad in scrubs with stethoscopes in their pockets, are the backbone of the healthcare industry and a physician’s most trusted ally.
Caregiving has evolved through time. While formal education and training in this field have only existed for a few centuries. Initially, only a wet nurse and a midwife performed nursing duties. It wasn’t until the 16th century that the term became synonymous with someone who cares for the ill.
Florence Nightingale was the first to establish what are now known as modern nursing practises. She was given the name Florence and was born in Florence, Italy. She served as a nurse during the Crimean War and utilised the knowledge she gained to develop a holistic nursing system upon her return home. During the war, she acquired the moniker ‘the Lady with the Lamp’ due to her reputation for attacking soldiers at night. Nightingale was a prolific writer who wrote about nursing techniques. She was also a skilled statistician, using data and charts to convey her findings and draw conclusions. She invented one of the earliest types of pie charts.
She founded the first secular nursing school in 1870. It was conducted in partnership with St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, which is now a division of King’s College. She implemented a number of hygiene and sanitation measures, including the use of the nurse’s headwear. Florence Nightingale was a pioneer in modern nursing, and her birthday is celebrated annually as International Nursing Day.

Be inventive. Create a greeting card or poster for your preferred nurse. Or, organise a sing-along at your nearby hospital. If it feels like too much of an effort — despite the fact that they deserve it for all their hard work — simply express your gratitude the next time you see them.
During their daily 12-hour duty, a nurse walks four to five miles. If you have close friends or family, treat them to a leisure day or a foot massage. Or, purchase them a cup of coffee or a special meal today.
Share a special memory with a nurse or submit a picture using the hashtag #CelebrateNurses on social media. Or, if you know an intelligent person who enjoys caring for others, convince them to enter the noble profession.
