Every year on March 13, Intrauterine Growth Restriction Awareness Day is observed. I.U.G.R. is a condition that causes foetal growth retardation. It affects thousands of women in the United States. This holiday raises awareness about the condition. It disseminates knowledge regarding its causes, symptoms, detection methods, and treatments. The survivors are given the opportunity to share their accounts and experiences. This informs individuals that they are not alone and have coping options available to them. It ensures that everyone has the opportunity to receive the finest possible medical care.

The background of IUGR Awareness Day

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a condition affecting unborn infants. While in the mother’s womb, the child encounters poor growth. There are numerous reasons why this could occur. Occasionally, it occurs when the infant does not receive sufficient oxygen. Women who reside at lofty altitudes are vulnerable. It can also occur if the infant does not receive adequate nutrition from the placenta. This can be caused by placental problems, elevated blood pressure, infections, or multiple births, such as twins.

Certain behaviours raise the likelihood of I.U.G.R. These behaviours include alcohol abuse, smoking, inadequate diet, and drug abuse. I.U.G.R. risk factors include heart disease, diabetes, anaemia, and coagulation disorders. Women with kidney disease, thyroid disease, or uterine malformations may also give birth to infants who struggle with foetal growth. The infant may be tiny all over as it grows. Occasionally, the baby’s cranium is of average size while its body is small. Typically, this depends on the underlying cause of the development restriction.

Ultrasound is used to evaluate and confirm the condition. To determine the I.U.G.R.’s cause, additional tests are conducted. Depending on the results, it may be necessary to deliver the infant early. The child’s development after birth depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition.
