National Adverse Drug Event Day is celebrated annually on March 24. Everyone is aware that the purpose of medicine is to treat or prevent the entry of hazardous, unsafe, and unhealthy substances into the body. If you have an allergic reaction to something you consume, for instance, you will most likely grab a bottle of antihistamines. You will eventually feel better. On the other hand, you may not feel improved and experience additional adverse effects. This is an example of a drug-related adverse event. A drug-related adverse event (A.D.E.) occurs when a patient is injured or negatively affected by medication. A.D.E.s are responsible for 3.5 million doctor visits and 2.2 million hospitalizations annually. It influences $136 billion annually in U.S. healthcare. Knowing this, it may be advantageous for us to gain a deeper understanding of A.D.E.s.

The background of National Adverse Drug Event Awareness

National Adverse Drug Event Awareness Day was established by the American Society of Pharmacovigilance in February 2021. (A.S.P.). They declared that the holiday would be celebrated annually on March 24. A.S.P is a non-profit organization whose mission and duty is to reduce the increased rates of suffering and deaths caused by A.D.E. in the United States in a timely and effective manner. A.D.E. comprises medication-related allergic reactions, medication-related errors, medication-related adverse effects, and medication overdoses. Annually, adverse drug reactions (A.D.R.) are responsible for 1,300,000 visits to the emergency room. A.D.E. is the most costly and most preventable hospital-acquired condition, according to the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (A.H.R.Q.).

In 2019, approximately 4.38 billion prescriptions were filled by pharmacies. A.D.E. is the fourth-leading cause of mortality in the United States, despite the fact that it can be greatly reduced by informing the appropriate parties. The A.S.P. urges everyone to report adverse drug reactions to MedWatch, the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program. Anyone can file a report via phone, mail, or the Internet. Les données indicate that less than 10 percent of adverse reactions and events are actually reported to the FDA.

On March 24, 2022, the A.S.P. emphasized the importance of educating the public not only about adverse drug reactions, but also about preventative measures. They initiated the “Fourth Cause Campaign,” which encourages and reminds individuals to share their A.D.E.-related personal experiences. In addition, it urges organizations, physicians, nurses, and all healthcare professionals to deliberate and discuss their efforts to reduce adverse drug reactions and master medication safety.
