Since 1988, on the first Sunday of June, or June 4 this year, the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation has mobilised its forces and resources to promote National Cancer Survivors Day in the United States and internationally. The NCSD Foundation describes the holiday as a “celebration of life” where survivors — defined as anyone with a history of the disease, from the time of diagnosis until the end of life — gather with friends, families, and supporters to raise awareness, disseminate information, provide services, and honour other survivors, demonstrating that life after a cancer diagnosis can be full and rewarding.
On June 5, 1988, the first National Cancer Survivors Day was observed. The style of remembrance has always been that of an open network, with local municipalities, hospitals, and other organisations holding parades and rallies independently but simultaneously. According to the NCSD website, anyone can register an event and receive the organization’s support. The organisation provides a variety of resources, including a roster of speakers — medical professionals, major and minor celebrities, authors, and others — who are available to help organise events in their respective locations.
NCSD celebrations have also included art exhibits, carnivals, contests, and prominent survivor testimonies. In 2008, President George W. Bush delivered the commencement address alongside the director of the National Cancer Institute.
National Cancer Survivors Day is typically covered by the publication “Coping with Cancer.” During the 2020 celebration, the magazine reported that many events were cancelled or changed to online-only or socially distant versions, but the day still included a drive-through’red carpet’ celebration in Louisville, Kentucky with vehicles decked out in pink and red; a parade by the New Orleans Pussyfooters in that city wearing pink corsets and plumage; a virtual Ribbon Walk in Fort Wayne, Indiana; and numerous other unique instances of coming together in solidarity.
The process for registering your own NCSD event is simple and streamlined on their website, ncsd.org, so why not join survivors and allies in your community in June, in conjunction with the larger event? Make the day enjoyable and meaningful.

It may be possible to maintain a reduced work schedule during chemotherapy for some patients receiving chemotherapy.
Not all forms of chemotherapy are administered intravenously; some are applied topically or taken orally.
Some adverse effects, including heart and lung issues, nerve damage, and others, can manifest months or years after the initial chemotherapy treatment.
Some survivors experience few or no adverse effects, including hair loss and fatigue.
Caution is advised if you have been taking vitamin supplements such as A, C, and E, as excessive doses of these and other vitamins can interfere with chemotherapy.
