National Career Nurse Assistants Day kicks off National Nursing Assistants Week on the Thursday of the second full week of June every year. This year’s event occurs on June 15. The background of National Career Nurse Assistants Day

Assistants to nurses have existed for a very long time, actually since World War I! The conflict exhausted the tens of thousands of deployed nurses alongside the soldiers. In response to this circumstance, the American Red Cross created the Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Service. This programme trained uncertified, volunteer young women to provide rudimentary assistance to overworked nurses as nursing assistants. In the 1980s, there were concerns about the quality of care supplied by untrained staff in these nursing homes. This issue was resolved with the passage of a special law mandating certification for all nursing assistants. This signified the transition in the profession.
