On May 12, National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day draws attention to fibromyalgia, which has plagued countless individuals for centuries. Fibromyalgia is a disorder of the musculoskeletal system that produces widespread chronic pain. In addition to exhaustion, anxiety, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, skin sensitivity, insomnia, numbness, and stiffness, other symptoms include numbness and stiffness. Fibromyalgia sufferers are either misdiagnosed or go undiagnosed for years. Due to a lack of research and the difficulty in identifying the factors that cause the illness, many people also believe that it is not genuine. In addition, there is no permanent treatment to alleviate the suffering.
The background of National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day
The first National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day was observed in 1992 in honour of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a British social reformist and the founder of modern nursing. During the Crimean War, Nightingale served as a trainer and superintendent for nurses in Constantinople, for which she is lauded. She may have suffered from fibromyalgia, according to researchers who studied her exhaustively after her death and concluded that she may have had the condition. Lynne Matallana, who founded the National Fibromyalgia Association, instituted the day in 1998. Matallana has been afflicted with the disease for nearly thirty years; therefore, she founded the organisation to raise awareness of the disease and assist others in coping with it.
It is believed that fibromyalgia affects many individuals across the globe, regardless of age, gender, or other preexisting conditions. However, women are seven times more likely to suffer from these diseases than males, according to some reports. Symptoms include hypersensitivity to heat and cold, migraines, joint pain, depression, memory and concentration issues, etc. These symptoms may persist for minutes, hours, days, months, or even years. However, some patients may exhibit no symptoms at all. Although there is currently no permanent cure for fibromyalgia, people can still relieve their pain with the proper medication, therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
