National IV Nurse Day 2024: Every year on January 25, we commemorate National IV Nurse Day, a day honoring infusion nurses and other healthcare professionals whose contributions to our society are invaluable. Even though this holiday has been observed for more than 40 years, its significance only grows with time. In this battle against diseases, brave nurses are leading the way, and IV nurses have a crucial role to play. For those who want to pursue nursing as a career, there are numerous scholarships available.

History of National IV Nurse Day

The United States House of Representatives created National IV Nurse Day in 1980 to recognize infusion nurses for their unselfish commitment to their work.

I.V. nurses, or infusion nurses, are nurses who oversee nearly every facet of intravenous (I.V.) patient care. In addition to monitoring the patient’s response to treatment, they ensure that patients receive the proper IV. IV nurses also manage the supplies, such as needles and catheters, that are utilized in patient care. Throughout the IV therapy, they make sure that every piece of equipment is in its proper location.

To track how a patient is responding to treatment, IV nurses also keep an eye on their vital signs. This is done to ensure that the patient has no negative consequences and to stop the infection from spreading to the area.

Nonetheless, their role goes beyond professional procedures and includes providing patients with information, comfort, and education. IV nurses may engage patients in conversation to help them feel more at ease and less anxious about the procedure.

Although it may appear to be a relatively recent development, infusion therapy dates back to the 1700s. A teenage boy in Paris in 1667 was given a transfusion of lamb blood to save his life. Physician Jean Baptiste Denis, who served as King Louis XIV’s physician, performed the surgery. An animal that was on the verge of death had previously received a blood transfusion using the blood of another animal.

Another pivotal point in the history of IV therapy occurred in 1900 when Karl Landsteiner established a theory and demonstrated that human blood could be divided into four categories, which are still in use today: A, B, AB, and O classifications.

Overall, IV nurses should be honored for their frequently unappreciated work. The state of modern medicine would be very different without them.
