According to a recent study, police officers have the highest risk of suicide among all occupations. Throughout their tenure, professionals observe an average of 188 critical incidents.
National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day is celebrated annually on September 26. This day commemorates the calamity of suicide. In addition, it seeks to encourage an open dialogue regarding the mental health of law enforcement officers and to continue eliminating the stigma associated with seeking assistance. Blue H.E.L.P. created National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day in 2020 to recognize the issue, support the families, offer solutions, honor the deceased, and continue to raise awareness to end suicide. Everyone must be reassured that they are not alone.
According to a recent study, police officers have the highest risk of suicide among all occupations. Throughout their tenure, professionals observe an average of 188 critical incidents. Despite the fact that these experiences place a hefty burden on law enforcement officers, many do not seek treatment or assistance. These police personnel are five times more likely than civilians to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Annually, more officers commit suicide than are assaulted by criminals as a result of continuous exposure to traumatic events and daily job stress.
National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day was created to honor the service of officers who have perished by suicide while on duty and to raise awareness about suicide among law enforcement agencies. This day also serves as a reminder to officers and their families that they are not alone and that help is available. It will also aid in reducing the stigma associated with seeking treatment and recognizing that a single incident does not define a person’s entire existence.
On September 26, we highlighted positive change initiatives and instruments to aid law enforcement officers with mental health concerns. Blue H.E.L.P., a First H.E.L.P. (Honor, Educate, Lead, Prevent) program, established National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day. Blue H.E.L.P. wishes to ensure that this issue is prioritized and that we never forget that first responders should be honored for their service to their communities and that their families should be supported afterward. We encourage those in need to seek assistance.
