The background of National Minority Donor Awareness Day

National Minority Donor Awareness Week includes National Minority Donor Awareness Day. The purpose of both occasions is to increase organ donation among minority communities. National Minority Donor Awareness Week is celebrated annually during the first week of August to recognise the contribution of multicultural donors and their families, as well as to emphasise the critical need for minority communities to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors. Although it is not unusual for a candidate to match a donor from a different racial or ethnic group, transplant success rates increase exponentially when organs are matched between individuals of the same ethnic background. This means that a shortage of organs donated by certain communities may result in lengthier transplant waiting times.

Within the African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic-American, Native American, and Pacific Islander-American communities, transplant shortages are a major concern. 57% of those on the organ waiting list and only 30% of the donor population are minorities. Due to unavoidable or chronic conditions, minority patients have an increased need for transplants involving the heart, kidney, pancreas, and liver. When matching donors and recipients, healthcare facilities take several factors into account, but blood type is the most crucial. Since ethnic groups tend to have similar blood types, the success rate increases when donors and recipients are of the same race or ethnicity. A similar ethnic or racial background makes the transplant procedure easier and more likely to be successful, although it is not required.
