National No Smoking Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Tobacco

National No Smoking Day originated in the Republic of Ireland on Ash Wednesday in 1984, when the ruling clergy decided that giving up cigarettes for Lent was a good idea.

National No Smoking Day, observed annually on the second Wednesday of March, will occur on March 8, 2023. The day is intended as an opportunity to reach out to acquaintances and family members who are addicted to nicotine. According to research, the number of cigarette smokers worldwide who are not actively attempting to cease is rapidly declining. The stigma associated with smoking and the hazards of first- and second-hand smoke tend to intensify over time. On National No Smoking Day, however, many are encouraged to assist others in quitting.

The background of National No Smoking Day

National No Smoking Day originated in the Republic of Ireland on Ash Wednesday in 1984, when the ruling clergy decided that giving up cigarettes for Lent was a good idea. Since then, the date of the holiday has been moved to the second Wednesday of March, making it more predictable.

In the 1920s, the first medical reports linking smoking to cancer appeared. Extensive research conducted in the 1950s and 1960s confirmed that smoking caused a variety of fatal diseases. Rapidly expanding knowledge of the negative health effects of active and passive smoking led to a decline in smoking prevalence.

Now, the British Heart Foundation organises the National No Smoking campaign, and each year its members create a marketing slogan. In 2010, for instance, the slogan was “Stand free!” That year, advertisements on television depicted smokers breaking cigarettes rather than consuming them.

Historically, the Republic of Ireland was home to a large number of heavy smokers, but in recent years this number has consistently decreased. According to the annual Healthy Ireland Survey, in the preceding three years, 80,000 individuals quit smoking.

According to the World Health Organization, tobacco is responsible for the deaths of more than 8 million people annually. More than 7 million of these fatalities are attributable to direct tobacco use, while approximately 1.2 million are attributable to secondhand smoke exposure. Despite the statistics, government warnings, labels, and age and location restrictions contributed to the smoking decline.
