It is surprising to discover that these developments are relatively recent, given the central role that psychologists and psychiatrists play in our everyday lives.
National Shrink Day is observed annually on September 5 to honour the special relationship we have developed with our psychiatrists and therapists. This day serves as a reminder of the contributions made by therapists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and psychologists to our society. These benevolent individuals perform a significant role in our communities, meriting praise. The holiday was established to honour Bob Newhart, who portrayed a psychiatrist on “The Bob Newhart Show.”
It is surprising to discover that these developments are relatively recent, given the central role that psychologists and psychiatrists play in our everyday lives. Ancient societies were interested in the philosophical study of psychology and human emotions, but this was a far cry from the specialised academic field that psychological studies represent today. In Ancient Egypt, for instance, scholars attempted to investigate mental disorders.
The earliest instances of academic psychological research date back to the nineteenth century. German scientists and philosophers Gustav Fechner and Wilhelm Wundt conducted the earliest systematic studies of the human psyche and founded the first psychological research laboratory. In the late 1800s, interest in psychology increased. During this time, the Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud developed the earliest psychoanalytic frameworks. His research eventually influenced the development of speech-based therapy, which is now extensively used.
Throughout the 20th century, psychology as a field expanded tremendously, spawning several new subdisciplines. Behavioural research became a subject of increasing study in the United States, with a number of grants devoted to this field. During the early decades of the 20th century, psychology also became an officially recognised academic discipline, with courses and degrees at universities.
Beginning in the second half of the 20th century, psychological and psychiatric practises gained popularity. Eventually, psychology and related fields become a part of general medicine, with dedicated programmes in schools, the military, and a number of public and private institutions. The significance of a psychologist’s work is demonstrated by the growing importance of mental health in our daily existence.

According to numerous studies, the human brain can store approximately 2.5 million gigabytes of information.
A couple of weeks after conception, the base of the nervous system forms, commencing with the neural plate and then the brain.
Some memories are remembered more vividly than others due to the prioritisation of memories by emotional reactions.
Emotions are primarily responsible for brain changes, as they are triggered by hormones and chemical reactions that can physically alter our brains.
Despite the advances made in neurology and psychology over the past few decades, the human brain remains an enigma.
