Good mental health is not limited to the absence of mental disorders. It is also influenced by our capacity to deal with stress, interact with others, perform efficiently, and contribute to the community. It is essential throughout all stages of existence, from childhood to adulthood.
Since 2017, National Silence the Shame Day has been observed annually on May 5. It is an opportunity to spread positive mental health awareness to a larger audience and eliminate the stigma associated with it. The Hip-Hop Foundation, led by former music executive Shanti Das, founded ‘Silence the Shame,’ a non-profit organisation dedicated to mental health education and awareness. Activities such as outreach programmes and wellness training aim to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and provide support for mental health. Thus, National Silence the Shame Day was born.

Physical and mental health are equally important in determining our overall health. Mental health can fluctuate over time. For instance, depression can increase the risk for a variety of physical health issues, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke. Similarly, chronic physical conditions may contribute to mental illness. When a person is unable to manage with life’s demands, such as economic difficulties or working long hours, they may experience poor mental health.
Mental disorders are one of the most prevalent health issues we face in the present day. According to a report compiled by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the United States, one in twenty adults experience significant mental illness annually. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least one in every 25 Americans lives with a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Mental maladies can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, adverse experiences such as trauma or abuse, chronic medical conditions, and feelings of isolation. Many individuals with mental health issues lack access to affordable treatment. Those who may have access endure in silence due to the associated stigma. Therefore, education and awareness are essential in order to aid those who suffer in silence obtain the necessary assistance.

Poverty, unemployment, violence, migration, and other adverse conditions may have an impact on the mental health of adolescents, their carers, and their relationships.
People do not choose to suffer from mental illness, nor is it a result of weakness or lack of resolve.
Actually, mental health issues affect millions of individuals around the world.
Symptoms can be better managed with the aid of therapy and medication, and some mental health disorders may also resolve over time.
