National Stop Snoring Week 2023: Date, History, How to Observe

Snoring is caused by turbulence and resistance in the back of the larynx, which is typically the result of an excess of soft tissues.

National Stop Snoring Week was proclaimed by the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association (B.S.S.A.A.) to raise awareness about snoring and sleep issues related to “dangerous snoring.” A significant portion of the adult population snores. In 4% to 10% of adults, chronic snoring may be an indication of a potentially fatal sleep disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring and sleep apnea are two extremes of the spectrum of sleep respiratory disorders.

The background of National Stop Snoring Week

Snoring is caused by turbulence and resistance in the back of the larynx, which is typically the result of an excess of soft tissues. Numerous individuals who believe that a good night’s sleep is a fundamental privilege find snoring to be a significant problem. Sound sleep has a significant impact on health. In fact, sleep is so important that the World Health Organisation (WHO) convened a meeting to examine the long-term effects of disturbed sleep on health.

Long-term exposure to deafening noise can cause sleep disturbances, the onset of hearing loss, a decline in daily functionality, mental health issues, cognitive challenges, and unacceptable social behaviour. Sleep deprivation can also have negative effects on physiological systems such as hormone secretion, glucose regulation, and cardiovascular function, resulting in poor health overall.

According to studies, sleep quality declines with increasing pollution levels. The decibel level is also a problem. The sound of snoring can range from soft vibrations or whistles to extremely harsh growling. Some sounds, despite having the same volume, are irritating while others are not. It is well known that snoring cannot be tolerated for extended periods of time without disrupting sleep.
