The history of this day begins in 1992, when the Patient Affairs Committee sought sanction from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to instruct all transplant centres to appoint dedicated staff for providing financial counselling and resolving patients' insurance issues.
Every year on April 10, National Transplant Financial Coordinator Day is observed. The board of directors of the Transplant Financial Coordinator Association (T.F.C.A.) established it in 2020. The day is celebrated to bring attention to transplant financial coordinators and patients undergoing organ transplant procedures. This day seeks to provide patients and their families with accurate financial information, as well as maximise reimbursement for transplant centres covered by T.F.C.A.
The history of this day begins in 1992, when the Patient Affairs Committee sought sanction from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to instruct all transplant centres to appoint dedicated staff for providing financial counselling and resolving patients’ insurance issues. Later that year, UNOS sent a proposal emphasising the significance of the newly created position of Transplant Financial Coordinator (T.F.C.). In 83 of the 133 institutions that responded to a 1998 national survey of 274 transplant hospitals, employees spent at least half of their time addressing the financial concerns of transplant patients.
Coordinators may verify patients’ insurance coverage, obtain transplant authorization, respond to inquiries, or handle billing and collections on a daily basis. Sixth annual UNOS Transplant Management Forum results were presented. Also presented was a recommendation for formalising the position within the UNOS. After the Board meeting in June 1999, the requested recommendations were implemented.
The T.F.C.A., a non-profit professional organisation, signed an association agreement on April 10, 2001. Its purpose is to streamline the dissemination of useful financial information regarding organ transplants. The organisation provides pertinent financial advice to patients and their families while optimising transplant centres’ compensation. The T.F.C.A. Board of Directors has designated November 2020 as National Transplant Financial Coordinator Day.
