The background of Parental Alienation Awareness Day

Observed in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda, Parental Alienation Awareness Day (P.A.A.D.) is a special day established as part of a global parental alienation awareness campaign. The purpose of Parental Alienation Awareness Day on April 25 is to educate parents and other carers about the effects parental alienation could have on their children, as well as to help adults recognise warning signs that they or someone close to the child may be behaving in a way that could negatively impact the children. Parental alienation typically occurs when one carer attempts to turn a child against the other. Typically, this is done to convince the child and exclude the other parent from the child’s existence.

Some of the most common types of parental behaviour include: constantly badmouthing the other parent, limiting or minimising the other parent’s contact, forbidding the child from talking about or discussing the other parent, faking an expression that the other parent dislikes or does not love the child, and attempting to force the child to reject the parent in order to create distance between the two. Parental alienation may cause irreparable psychological harm to children that can last well into adulthood.

Canadian Sarvy Emo conceived of Parental Alienation Awareness Day (P.A.A.D.). Late in 2005, Emo instituted this day, with the original date being March 28. For marketing purposes, the date was altered to April 25 a year after the company’s founding.
