The background of Terri’s Day

Terri Schindler Schiavo, then 26 years old, collapsed in her Florida residence on February 25, 1990. She survived a cardiac arrest caused by complications resulting from an eating disorder. She suffered cerebral damage due to a lack of oxygen, resulting in a persistent vegetative state. She was provided with artificial nutrition and hydration through a feeding tube.

Michael, her spouse and legal guardian, stated in 1998 that she would not want to be kept alive in this manner. Her parents opposed his plan to disconnect the feeding tube and allow her to expire. Seven years of highly publicised litigation ensued between him and Robert and Mary Schindler.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Florida eventually granted Michael’s request. On April 24, 2001, Terri’s feeding tube was removed for the first time, only to be replaced a few days later. Several appeals and government intervention occurred subsequently. Even President George W. Bush signed a law that referred the case to the federal courts. Despite additional appeals, the right of a spouse to make medical decisions on their partner’s behalf was upheld. Her feeding tube was disconnected, and she expired on March 31, 2005, less than two weeks later.

Schiavo’s case demonstrated that regardless of infirmity or illness, we must value the dignity of human life. Through the celebration of Terri’s Day, it is anticipated that the woman who became the symbol of the debate over the right to life or death will always be remembered.
