World Alzheimer’s Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia that impairs memory and daily functioning. It accounts for between 60 and 80 percent of dementia cases. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist, identified the disease in 1901 while treating a German woman. The disease was given his name.

World Alzheimer’s Day is annually observed on September 21. On this day, the global community focuses on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. The disease is one of the most common forms of dementia, a group of disorders that impair cognitive function. World Alzheimer’s Day is the ideal occasion for us to elevate our voices and develop new strategies to combat the disease’s effects.

The background of World Alzheimer’s Day

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that impairs memory and daily functioning. It accounts for between 60 and 80 percent of dementia cases. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist, identified the disease in 1901 while treating a German woman. The disease was given his name.

Due to its effects on the victim’s closest relatives, the condition is frequently referred to as a familial illness. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the primary causes of death in America. There are no preventative measures, no cure, and even the disease’s progression cannot be delayed.

Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) was founded in 1984 and is charged with assisting victims, educating the public, and advancing related policies.
ADI introduced World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, 1994, during their annual conference in Edinburgh to commemorate their 10th anniversary. The Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) coordinates World Alzheimer’s Day and World Alzheimer’s Month globally, collaborating with member organizations and associations to organize events and raise awareness.

On World Alzheimer’s Day in 2009, the inaugural ‘World Alzheimer Report’ was released, and annual reports have been issued annually since then. Although the impact of the observance is extending, the information gap and stigma associated with dementia continue to be a problem. Many individuals view the disease as a normal consequence of aging.

Age is one of the leading causes of Alzheimer’s disease, but it is not exclusively a disease of the elderly. In the United States alone, approximately 200,000 individuals under the age of 65 struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Concerned individuals and organizations can participate in this observance by raising awareness and contacting their national Alzheimer’s association.
