World Dyslexia Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Dyslexia

As a cognitive disorder, dyslexia can impact both adults and children. As its presentation is predominantly exocutaneous, it facilitates prompt diagnosis.

Annually, World Dyslexia Day is observed on October 8. Aspects that the average person takes for granted, such as the ability to read and write effortlessly, are challenging for those with dyslexia. A prevalent cognitive disorder, dyslexia impairs an individual’s reading and writing abilities. Frequent errors occur in the writing and reading speed of individuals with dyslexia. Tasks requiring hand-eye coordination, reading, writing, and vocabulary may be difficult for individuals with dyslexia. With an incidence rate of 20%, it comprises 80% to 90% of individuals diagnosed with cognitive disorders. World Dyslexia Day brings attention to these concerns and the possible treatments for this disorder.

The background of World Dyslexia Day

As a cognitive disorder, dyslexia can impact both adults and children. As its presentation is predominantly exocutaneous, it facilitates prompt diagnosis. 1881 marked the initial identification of dyslexia by the German physician Oswald Berkhan. Six years subsequent to the disorder’s identification, ophthalmologist Rudolph Berlin designated it as “dyslexia.” Berkhan identified the developmental reading disorder through an examination of the case involving a young child who presented with significant challenges in acquiring accurate reading and writing skills. Given the patient’s overall physical and mental health, Berkhan was particularly fascinated by his case.

As soon as word of his discoveries spread, Berkhan realized that his juvenile patient’s condition was not exceptional; in fact, it appeared that a significant number of adults were also afflicted. Similar to several other disabilities, dyslexia does not respond favorably to medication alone. Patients frequently require therapy, innovative learning strategies, and consistent care from caregivers in order to lead manageable lives despite their learning difficulties. Patients who remain undiagnosed for the disorder are frequently misunderstood as being unmotivated, learning slowly, or obstinate with a propensity to cause disruptions. Clearly, this cannot be further from the truth.

Since the discovery of dyslexia, medical professionals and clinicians across the globe have endeavored to identify the most effective management strategies for this disorder. As reading can be difficult for those with dyslexia, a font designed specifically for this disorder has been developed to facilitate reading. October is also observed annually as Dyslexia Awareness Month, an initiative of The International Dyslexia Association, in addition to World Dyslexia Day.
