World IBD Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about IBD

IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease, is a group of diseases that affect the digestive tract. Colitis ulcerative and Crohn's disease are the two primary forms of IBD.

World IBD Day is observed annually on May 19. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of inflammatory bowel diseases. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most prevalent forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our digestive tracts are affected by these chronic inflammatory conditions. EFCCA coordinates patient organisations from over 50 countries. They began the day in 2010 to support the fight against inflammatory bowel diseases, raise awareness of the conditions, and encourage research and studies in the field. IBD is not curable. It is possible to considerably reduce inflammation and lengthen the duration of remission with the aid of treatment and medication.

The background of World IBD Day

IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease, is a group of diseases that affect the digestive tract. Colitis ulcerative and Crohn’s disease are the two primary forms of IBD. Colitis ulcerative affects the colon or large intestine, whereas Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract. Inflammation and ulcers can be symptoms of both conditions. These conditions are marked by symptoms including diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, weight loss, fatigue, and abdominal discomfort. Generally, IBD is not fatal, but it can lead to hazardous and life-threatening complications that can be extremely difficult to treat.

The precise causes of IBD are unknown to physicians. Initially, it was believed that diet and tension were the causes of the disease. However, it has been demonstrated that these factors only exacerbate the condition and are not the direct cause. Immune response or genetics may be to blame. According to research, the inflammation may be caused by the immune system’s reaction to innocuous microbes or food in the digestive tract. Hereditary, genetic, and environmental factors may also contribute to the disease’s development.

Among the risk factors are family history, nationality, ethnicity, and way of life. The majority of individuals are diagnosed with IBD before the age of 30. However, some individuals are not diagnosed until they are 50 or 60 years old. In some individuals, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen can increase the risk of disease or exacerbate an existing condition. IBD risk factors include colon cancer, inflammation in the joints, scarring in the bile ducts, and blood clotting.
