In 1984, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Menopause Society (IMS) established World Menopause Day to raise awareness of this age-related condition that impacts women.
Menopause is the natural decline of a woman’s reproductive hormones commencing between the ages of 45 and 55, when the last menstrual cycle occurs.
The menopause is characterised by hot flashes, nocturnal sweats, mood shifts, and sleep disturbances. All of these symptoms can amplify anxiety and depression. After menopause, a woman’s risk of developing heart disease and osteoporosis increases.
As menopause is a natural part of ageing, it cannot be cured. Consequently, most treatments for menopause concentrate on symptomatic relief.
The condition has not been adequately investigated and is not openly discussed. World Menopause Day was viewed as a remedy to these issues because it promotes discussion and research on the menopause and its effects.
As global life expectancy increases, more women are likely to experience menopause. So that we can live better, healthier lives, it is essential that we are prepared for the effects that may result from menopause.
