World Pharmacists Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Someone somewhere presumably conceived the idea of using leaf juice to treat wounds as the beginning of the ancient art of pharmacy. In ancient Greek legends, gods were described as apothecaries and physicians.

The 25th of September is World Pharmacists Day, a commemoration of all pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and others in this field. Four million individuals are employed in this field worldwide. World Pharmacists Day is thus not only a welcome event, but it is also a significant occasion to recognize the contribution these individuals make to enhancing global health outcomes. Numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations sponsor events and activities on this day. Globally, their objective is to raise awareness about pharmacists and their functions.

The background of World Pharmacists Day

Someone somewhere presumably conceived the idea of using leaf juice to treat wounds as the beginning of the ancient art of pharmacy. In ancient Greek legends, gods were described as apothecaries and physicians. Asclepius, the Greek deity of healing, delegated the formulation of his remedies to his apothecary or pharmacist, Hygieia.

For a very long time, healing and pharmacy were frequently considered to be the same profession. By the 17th century, the distinction between medicine and pharmacy had been established. No longer could physicians prepare medications for patients themselves. World War II brought about another transformation in the discipline. Constantly new medicines were introduced to the market, and the role of the pharmacist became clearer than ever before.

The modern pharmacist performs a variety of crucial duties. Their responsibilities include identifying and providing patients with the correct medication, supervising the stocking and restocking of medications, and remaining on top of expiration dates. Probably for this reason, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) created this day to recognize all pharmacists. The FIP, as the premier global organization representing pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, seeks to support the pharmacist network and the growth of this profession. The FIP is also responsible for the reason why the annual celebrations are held on a specific date. According to the architects of this day, they wished to pay tribute to the organization that did so much for pharmacists. This is why they chose September 25, 1912, as the date for the establishment of the FIP.
