World Schizophrenia Awareness Day is observed on May 24 each year. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness, which affects more than twenty million individuals worldwide. Schizophrenia is stigmatised because it is rarely discussed and inaccurately portrayed in the media. World Schizophrenia Awareness Day was created to combat stigma and make it simpler for people to seek assistance from a variety of resources. It sheds light on the daily struggles faced by thousands of Schizophrenia sufferers from all over the globe.
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterised by psychotic symptoms such as persistent auditory and/or visual hallucinations, delusional thinking, dissociation from reality, and disorganised thoughts and behaviour. It typically begins to manifest in the early twenties, although in uncommon instances, symptoms may appear in early childhood. This disorder affects approximately 24 million individuals worldwide.
In the 1700s, descriptions of schizophrenics began to be recorded; this disease has existed since the dawn of civilization. Schizophrenia was not registered and recognised until the early 1900s, when psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler coined the term. However, proper treatment based on legitimate humane medical procedures was not adopted until 1980, when appropriate antipsychotic medication was introduced and a revolution in psychiatric treatment in general had already occurred.
Schizophrenia is a treatable and, in some cases, curable disorder. Patients have shown relief with the help of medication and psychotherapy. Many individuals still do not seek assistance. Those who do reach out are more likely to experience stigma due to their condition than to receive care. As a result, World Schizophrenia Awareness Day was created so that patients, their families and friends, as well as everyone in the world, can learn more about the disorder and know how to assist those who need it.
