In numerous cultural and religious traditions, spouses have been established as the protectors and providers of their wives and families since the earliest records of marriage.
Husband Appreciation Day is observed on the third Saturday of April. It is more romantic than Father’s Day, more serious than National Boyfriend Day, and less stressful than Valentine’s Day. This little-known holiday, also known as National Husband Day or World Husband Day, honours the males in our lives who support us every day of the year in overt and covert ways. It affords us fortunate spouses the opportunity to be creative and considerate in expressing our appreciation for our partners.
National Spouses Day on January 26 and Wife Appreciation Day on September 19 are additional opportunities to honour our significant others.
In numerous cultural and religious traditions, spouses have been established as the protectors and providers of their wives and families since the earliest records of marriage.
Certain religious traditions hold that husbands are responsible for their spouses’ physical and even spiritual protection. This protection can extend to a single wife for life or to multiple spouses. Traditionally, the role of husband has been a prestigious one, with the male making financial and other family planning decisions.
In the past three decades, significant cultural shifts have altered how many of us view, experience, and practise marriage. In many marriages, husbands are taking on more domestic responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and child care, while wives are working full time and bringing in as much, if not more, income than their husbands. As new norms of secularism, spirituality, same-sex marriage, and gender nonspecific identities become more ingrained in our cultural fabric, other couples have abandoned gender roles entirely. Through our continuously evolving history, one thing has remained constant: we adore our husbands.
The word husband has Middle English and Old Norse origins that approximately translate as “householder.”
In the early days of marriage, spouses were expected to safeguard not only their wives and children, but also the household’s servants and livestock.
While the majority of Western cultures have adopted the wedding ring as a symbol of marital status, husbands around the world have different signifiers – such as beards for the Amish or a tallit for Jews – to indicate they are taken; and some, such as Muslim husbands, are unlikely to wear any ornaments at all.
Uncommon practise once depicted in a novel by French author Francois Billetdoux, husband selling occurs when a wife sells her husband to another woman, solidifying her divorce from him and his new marriage.
While the practise of polygamy, in which a man has more than one wife, is observed in more than 400 societies worldwide (monogamy is only observed in 186), polyandry, in which a woman has more than one spouse, is observed in a little more than 50 societies.
