Lace has been around for centuries and has been used for a variety of purposes, from fashion to home decor – on this day, we commemorate the timeless and forever fashionable art of lacemaking.

The background of International Lace Day

Who created International Day is unknown, but the history of this delicate fabric is not. Lace is believed to have originated in the early sixteenth century. Long into the 17th century, lace was commonly synonymous with ties. In 1627, Frans Hals painted a portrait of Nicolaes Hasselaer wearing a black lace-collared garment.

It is difficult to pinpoint the precise origins of lace, but Venice was considered an essential trading hub. The earliest documented lace pattern books were printed in the 1550s. In the 1600s, high-quality lace was produced in numerous European centers. Even women who practiced textile arts acquired the skill of lacemaking. Lace has always been prominent in the fashion industry. In 1976, the lace industry also witnessed the formation of The Lace Guild, the publication of Pamela Nottingham’s “The Technique of Bobbin Lace,” and the introduction of the first polystyrene (styrofoam) pillows.

Initially, a skill that could only be conducted manually caused a fundamental shift in the business. Towards the close of the 18th century, the industrial revolution in Britain introduced machines for lacemaking, and the first machine lace was produced. The appeal of lacemaking now exists solely as a hobby, whereas the actual patterned fabric is mass-produced for commercial purposes. In the 20th century, lacemaking became a hobby rather than a profession, despite the fact that handmade lace is still available for purchase.

Although lace fashions come and go, it remains an exquisite staple throughout history. The 2021 ‘cottagecore’ fashion trend has recently seen a revival of vintage lace. International Lace Day annually honors the classic appearance and texture of lace.

Lace is still considered an elegant fabric used to decorate clothing and interiors. It is versatile and the correct design can truly elevate your entire appearance. International Lace Day is celebrated for this very reason.
