Judy lost her temper when songwriter Seymour Gottlieb instructed her to invite her grandparents to her celebration. More precisely, she shed tears. She replied to Gottlieb’s admonition not to weep, “It’s my party; I’ll cry if I want to!”

Gottlieb was motivated to compose the lyrics of a song by her response. He subsequently forwarded them to his writing collaborator, who subsequently forwarded them to a composer. The song was rewritten to be a treacly threnody about a girl who watches her boyfriend depart her party with another girl, as opposed to one about her grandparents enjoying herself with her friends.

Upon learning of Spector’s intention to record the song with the Crystals, Jones departed from the concert, immediately manufactured one hundred copies, and distributed them to radio stations the following day.
