Lash Stylists’ Day is observed on September 24 to honor eyelash stylists and those in the eyelash extension profession. Mink, silk, synthetic, human, or horsehair could be used to construct the eyelash extensions. Use of a cyanoacrylate adhesive to apply the extension(s) to the natural lash a few millimeters from the root of the natural eyelash, without making contact with the eyelid, is the primary method of application.

Henry Labouchère of “Truth” reported in 1882 that Parisian women had discovered a method to cut and create false eyelashes by sewing hair into the eyelids. A similar account appeared in an 1899 edition of “The Dundee Courier” in which the painful procedure for elongating the lashes was described. The article described how the procedure created lengthier eyelashes by sewing head hair into the eyelids.
Charles Nessler, a German-born hair specialist and renowned inventor, patented “A New or Improved Method of and Means for the Manufacture of Artificial Eyebrows, Eyelashes and the Like” in the United Kingdom in 1902. By 1903, he began selling artificial eyelashes at his Great Castle Street salon in London. He used the proceeds from these sales to finance his subsequent invention, the permanent wave machine. Commonly known as a perm, a permanent wave machine uses heat and/or chemicals to break and reform the cross-linking bonds of the hair structure.
