Libraries Remember Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Books

On the tenth anniversary of the horrific attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, there were discussions about how to remember the victims and honour their memory.

Libraries Remember Day is annually observed on September 11 to recognise the contribution of public libraries to social welfare. A public library is an educational institution where anyone can join for a nominal charge. Libraries enable us to access online information, read and discover new books, take notes, and establish communities centred on learning and knowledge. The library is a repository of knowledge and promotes equal learning opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or background. Libraries also play a crucial role in fostering the habit of reading and the search for answers to our questions.

The background of Libraries Remember Day

On the tenth anniversary of the horrific attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, there were discussions about how to remember the victims and honour their memory. On the site of the former World Trade Centre, it seemed apparent that a public library would be the most fitting memorial. Knowledge and equal access to that knowledge are represented by libraries. In addition, they represent freedom of expression, a celebration of diversity, the preservation of heritage, and optimism for the future. A library symbolises all that is steadfastly opposed to terrorism, hostility, bigotry, and fanaticism. Accordingly, it was determined that on September 11, the United States will honour its public libraries.

Since prehistoric times, libraries have been an integral element of our society. The first library was established in 2600 BCE. Since then, every significant civilization has documented its history in archives housed in libraries. The libraries of powerful emperors and monarchs have provided us with some of the most renowned literary works.

Libraries Remember Day is observed by facilitating communication, cultivating citizenship, promoting understanding, ensuring unfettered access to information, and welcoming everyone to libraries as a symbol of liberty and courage. Libraries Remember Day honours the contribution public libraries make to the maintenance of a free society in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Numerous public libraries across the United States are open 24 hours on this day, which begins at midnight and ends at the following midnight. The libraries host activities, remembrances, and performances throughout the day.
