Loud Shirt Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Deafness

Hearing impairment and hearing loss likely trace back thousands of years, if not to the beginning of human history.

New Zealand celebrates Loud Shirt Day on October 21. It is an unofficial holiday dedicated to raising awareness about children with hearing disabilities and impairment throughout New Zealand. In New Zealand, only two prominent charities have assumed responsibility for managing deaf or hard-of-hearing children: “The Hearing House” and “Southern Cochlear Implant Programme.” In New Zealand, Loud Shirt Day is the annual fundraising event through which these organisations raise the necessary funds to continue contributing to the administration and rehabilitation of deaf children.

The background of Loud Shirt Day

Hearing impairment and hearing loss likely trace back thousands of years, if not to the beginning of human history. Let’s discuss total deafness and the culture of those who live with it, also known as ‘the Deaf culture.’

In recent or relatively recent history, deafness has centred on sign language and interpersonal relationships. Although some perceive and treat deafness as a disability, those who are deaf merely view themselves as a language minority.Deaf people have been able to lead normal lives and function just as well as hearing people throughout history, albeit with additional effort and adaptability. Numerous accomplishments have been attributed to deaf individuals, the most notable being Ludwig van Beethoven and Thomas Alva Edison, who both made positively influential contributions to contemporary human culture. In 1816, Laurent Clerc, a French educator of the deaf, immigrated to the United States, where he and Thomas H. Gallaudet, an American educator, helped establish the first permanent school for deaf children.

In the late 1850s, there was a debate as to whether a distinct deaf state should exist in the Western United States due to the prominence of the deaf community. It was proposed that the deaf state would be a site where all deaf people could migrate and live normal lives if they so desired. The proposed state did not materialise.

In 1880, hearing educators at the Second International Congress on Education of the Deaf in Milan, Italy, voted to implement oral education and eliminate sign language from deaf classrooms. This strategy aims to facilitate the integration of deaf children and adults into hearing communities. Even though there were initial disagreements as to whether the manual or oral method would benefit deaf pupils more, the manual method is now regarded as the preferred mode of Deaf communication.

Five facts about deafness

More than one billion young adults worldwide are at risk for hearing loss or impairment.

Due to the progressive nature of hearing loss, it may not be immediately detected or perceived.

Many individuals doubt the efficacy of hearing aids, and only one out of every five individuals to whom one is recommended actually utilises one.

The majority of cases of hearing loss do not result in total impairment; a great number of cases involve partial hearing loss.

Due to the nature of their profession, musicians, particularly live performers, are more susceptible to hearing loss than the general population.
