In 1975, the former public relations director of the Ocean City resort in New Jersey, Mark Soifer, created Martin Z. Mollusk Day, a Groundhog Day-like event in which the resort's mascot would attempt to spot his shadow on a nearby beach a few days prior to the start of summer.
Martin Z. Mollusk Day is observed annually on the first Saturday of the month of May. This year’s date is May 13. This event is held on the ninth Street Beach in Ocean City, New Jersey, and is considered the local equivalent of Groundhog Day. People from all over the city congregate to observe whether or not mascot Martin Z. Mollusk can see his full silhouette on the beach sand.
In 1975, the former public relations director of the Ocean City resort in New Jersey, Mark Soifer, created Martin Z. Mollusk Day, a Groundhog Day-like event in which the resort’s mascot would attempt to spot his shadow on a nearby beach a few days prior to the start of summer. The goal was to increase the number of visitors and the town’s visibility. Since then, the event has grown exponentially, and each year, an increasing number of people participate in the festivities.
On Martin Z. Mollusk Day, the Ocean City High School Band accompanies the school mascot to the shore. Other mascots, such as Dr. Ernest Frankenstein, Trash Buster, and Shelley the Mermaid, accompany him on his adventure. The event has expanded to promote environmental consciousness, ensuring that the shoreline remains clean throughout the celebrations. It has become a huge tradition in the city, and everyone participates in the festivities!
Martin Z. Mollusk is the event’s primary attraction. However, he is not actually a mollusk. That creature is a hermit crab! The belief is that if Martin sees his complete shadow on the ground, then summer will appear in New Jersey a week earlier than usual. The only time he missed it was in 1985, when he only saw half of his shadow and summer arrived only three days earlier, as opposed to a week earlier.
