The background of Midsummer

Midsummer began as a Stone Age pagan ritual for fertility and a fruitful harvest. Pagans believed that plants had curative properties during the summer solstice, and they honoured the day with rituals demonstrating reverence for nature. On Midsummer’s Eve, they danced around maypoles, fashioned garnets, gathered herbs, and lit bonfires to ward off evil entities. It was said that when the sun was in the southern hemisphere, spirits were allowed to roam the earth.

St. John’s Day was renamed to conform to Christian beliefs honouring St. John the Baptist during the fourth century. According to the Gospel of Luke, Saint John was born six months before Jesus’ birth, which would place his birthday in June. Despite the name change, some of the customs associated with Midsummer remained, including immersing in water the night before for purification, a feast, and prayer on the holiday.

Germany had its own Midsummer rituals during the Middle Ages, which were eventually adopted by Sweden and others. Neopagans of Germanic descent named their summer solstice celebration Litha. In their rituals, the Maypole was ornamented with leaves and erected on the first of May, hence its name. As it was difficult to locate green leaves at that time, the celebration was moved to midsummer.
