In the late 1800s, Germany began manufacturing modern automobiles, which then made their way to America. However, the majority of these automobiles were merely out of reach for the average American. That lasted until 1908.
Model T Day is observed annually on October 1 to commemorate the day that revolutionized American road travel. Model T was an iconic automobile that transformed America’s streetscape. We adore and respect Henry Ford immensely for introducing the automobile to America and contributing to its development. Celebrating Model T Day is our method of recognizing his remarkable enterprise.
In the late 1800s, Germany began manufacturing modern automobiles, which then made their way to America. However, the majority of these automobiles were merely out of reach for the average American. That lasted until 1908.
In January 1907, Henry Ford assembled a group of engineers and technicians with the intent of producing an automobile for the average American. On October 1, 1908, the team effectively introduced the Model T, a mass-produced automobile that most Americans could afford.
The first Model T automobile was produced by Ford on Piquette Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, on October 1, 1908. It was possibly the first automobile in the world that middle-class individuals could afford. Henry Ford’s invention was embraced by the American working class, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Ford Model T was a left-hand drive vehicle with an enclosed four-cylinder engine. Its body was constructed from vanadium alloy steel, giving it a robust exterior. Its high ground clearance endeared it to rural American drivers. Ford produced an automobile for the first time with all components manufactured in-house.
Ford Motor Company quickly constructed a new 60-acre factory in Highland Park to manufacture Model Ts due to the car’s immense popularity. In those days, the factory was arguably the largest mass-production facility. Henry Ford pioneered the use of conveyor belts on a moving assembly line for automobile production when he invented it in 1913. Six months later, a Model T could be produced in a little less than six hours, a significant reduction from the nearly 10 hours initially required.

Henry Ford engineered a publicity ploy in Scotland in 1911, where the son of a Scottish car dealer drove the Model T across the Scottish Highlands — the highest mountain in the British Isles at 4,500 feet.
The Model T was given humorous monikers including ‘Tin Lizzie,’ ‘Old Liz,’ and ‘Leaping Lena.’
First priced at ~$850 in 1908, the Model T was available in 1925 at less than $300 — equal to four months’ average wages.
Henry Ford mandated that dealers sell a subscription to “Ford International Weekly” with each Model T, resulting in circulation figures that were only surpassed by “The New York Post.”
Between 1913 and 1927, Ford Motor Company produced more than 15 million Model T automobiles.
