National Child Protection Week 2023: Date, History, Facts about Child Abuse

Australia's National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) has coordinated the National Child Protection Week (NCPW) campaign with the authorities and child protection advocacy groups for the past 30 years.

National Child Protection Week (N.C.P.W.) is observed throughout Australia each September as part of a nationwide initiative to protect children from abuse and neglect. This year, it takes place from 5 to 11 September. In many regions of the United States, child safety remains a pressing concern, as many low-income communities are susceptible to social problems that place children at risk. This weekly observance is part of the government’s and society’s efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

The background of National Child Protection Week

Australia’s National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) has coordinated the National Child Protection Week (NCPW) campaign with the authorities and child protection advocacy groups for the past 30 years. Similar programmes exist in other nations, including New Zealand and South Africa. This initiative aims to raise awareness of child maltreatment and aid in its prevention. In recent centuries, infant abuse and neglect have been recognised as major societal problems.

Researchers have documented instances of child abuse perpetrated by instructors and employers as far back as the nineteenth century. Despite the increased focus on this issue in recent years, it continues to affect societies all over the globe. During the 1960s, a number of studies were conducted on the behaviour and physical injuries of abused children. This was one of the earliest instances of academic interest in this subject.

Since the 1970s, child abuse studies have become a specialised academic discipline and attracted considerable interest. As part of an international legal structure, child protection laws have evolved. These statutes are now in place to protect children from maltreatment and discrimination, as their effects have been extensively researched.
