The sixteenth of September is National Dance Day! We provided the music; you provide the dance routines! Or, you may bring your own music. We are not too picky about the music selection or who provides the rhythms. We cannot wait to see you on the dance floor! If you have a signature dance move or routine, now is the time to show it off on the dance floor.
The background of National Dance Day
As a creative outlet for promoting a healthy lifestyle, this day was created to encourage Americans to appreciate the art of movement. In addition to being a creative outlet, dancing improves muscle tone, bone density, balance, flexibility, and strength. It was officially inaugurated in 2010 by national dance enthusiasts, including politicians and dance masters. Prior to 2019, the day was observed in July; however, in 2020, it will be observed for the second time on the third Saturday of September.
Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator of “So You Think You Can Dance” and co-founder of American Dance Movement, co-founded this holiday with Eleanor Holmes Norton ten years ago. National Dance Day was proposed by Congresswoman Norton as a resolution to promote artistic expression and physical activity.
Additionally, dance is an excellent method to improve both emotional and mental health. Consistent physical activity is a great way to relieve tension and stress, develop muscle, and improve one’s overall disposition. Every component of our health is interdependent. We all require health as a form of currency.
This activity-filled day was shifted from July to September due to an important partnership with the American Heart Association. The Association contacted National Dance Day because they needed new dance material and video content for their Kids’ Heart Challenge health initiative. Due in part to the school-affiliated nature of the partnership, National Dance Day has been transferred from the summer months to early autumn during the 2019 academic year.
